Team America Fights On

With a trio of Americans in the starting XI, Fulham continued their remarkable run to avoid relegation with a 2-0 home win over Birmingham City. Having won three of their last four, Fulham jumped over two teams in the table today to edge out of the relegation zone with one week remaining.

Brian McBride opened the scoring for the Cottagers in the 52nd minute and Kasey Keller kept a clean sheet for the home side. Fulham are now in 17th, level on points with Reading, who lost at home today 1-0 to Tottenham. With a six goal cushion on goal differential, Fulham are safe for now.

Although Fulham hold the lead, Reading have the advantage heading into next week. Reading are away to a Debry side that is headed towards the worst record in Premier League history with only one win this season. Meanwhile Fulham are away to FA Cup finalist Portsmouth, so you'd think Fulham will need a third-straight road win to be safe.

Also in the mix are Birmingham, one point behind Fulham and Reading, but with the best goal differential of the three. Birmingham are home to Blackburn next week. Elsewhere, Bolton picked up a vital 2-0 home win over Sunderland today, a victory that all but officially keeps the Wanderers safe in 16th.
