Liverpool-Chelsea Recap

If you're a Liverpool fan like myself, this afternoon's Champions League semifinal result was enough to make you sick. An own goal off the head of John Arne Riise deep into stoppage time gave Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Anfield, and sends them home for next week's second leg with a decided advantage.

The game was a typical Liverpool-Chelsea affair; tightly contested with limited scoring. Dirk Kuyt's fortuitous goal in the 43rd minute following some sloppy Chelsea defending gave the Reds a 1-0 lead, and Liverpool spent much of the second half looking as though they would add to that lead. It was not the best of games for Liverpool's duo of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres. Gerrard was a non-factor for much of the game and Torres squandered several fine scoring chances.

Unable to put the game out of reach, Liverpool paid the price in the dying seconds. Of all the rabbits Liverpool have pulled out of their hat in the Champions League, getting a positive result at Stamford Bridge next week may be the toughest trick yet. With the momentum and the home field advantage, all the pieces are in place for Chelsea to march on to Moscow.
